Our Philosophy
Our first goal is to enhance the sustainability of our neighborhoods. For this reason we offer our services on a sliding scale intended to cost less than conventional landscaping businesses and be affordable for all incomes.
Permaculture is an approach to designing gardens and living situations that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies.
It is a wholistic lifestyle intended to reduce society's reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution that fundamentally and systematically destroy Earth's ecosystems.
Permaculture has developed a large international following. This permaculture community continues to expand on the original ideas through a network of publications, permaculture gardens, intentional communities, training programs, and internet forums.
In this way, permaculture has become both a design system and a culture of adjusting the human lifestyle to suit the planet we live on.
At Sanctuary Gardens Northwest, we believe that organic and natural growing practices enhance the quality of our spaces as well as the quality of our food.
We utilize permaculture techniques in our implementation to promote healthy lifestyles and interactions with our environment ..
FAQ
How would this benefit me?
Having a permaculture garden as part of your landscape benefits you in many ways. Not only does it make you an example for you neighbors of local sustainability and local economy, it also provides you with fresh organically grown produce. Not to mention the beauty it will bring to your yard and community.
How much does it cost?
There are two costs to take into consideration. One is a start up cost which covers the supplies and plants it takes to get your garden and all it's amenities installed, and the other is the monthly maintenance fee for our time and energy spent maintaining and harvesting your new garden. The first is based purely on what it will take to make the transformation, and the second is on a sliding scale basis, to make it affordable for everyone. In the end it will also save you money that you would have spent otherwise on fresh produce and conventional landscaping. Ask us about our barter payment system to learn about off-setting some of the cost of maintenance with a percentage of the harvest.
Will my yard be certified organic?
No, while we use organic process to grow everything, it takes four years or more to certify a garden or farm as organic. If you wish to do this, we can begin the process for you, but organic certification is only useful if you want to sell your food as organic produce. Regardless, all food grown on your land by us will be organically grown and maintained even if it not certified.
How long will installing the garden take?
It really depends on the size and content of the garden. If we are going to completely reform your entire yard, obviously it will take longer than if we are just revamping an existing garden. We do what we can to plan with the shape of your yard so that the least disturbance possible shows outwardly as we work. Some clients want water catchment systems or compost and worm bins installed as well, which also takes a little extra time. However, we take advantage of the massive potential employee pool in our current economic situation to employ as many people as is efficient to get the work done quickly with high quality standards in mind.
How much control do I have over what my garden looks like?
Complete. We work with you to form a plan that will allow for high yielding gardens as well as the physical appearance you desire. Like any landscaping company, we work with you throughout the entire project to make sure what you want is what your getting.
